The free preview, and what you owe

"You only pay if you love it" is on this site in a lot of places, and it is true. Here is the whole of it, in order.

The preview costs nothing. You see real work built for your own business before you spend a dollar. If you do not love it, you walk away and you owe me nothing.

If you do go ahead and pay the deposit, you can still change your mind and get back every dollar, right up until I send your first full draft.

After that, the only money that is not refundable is money for a finished draft that is already in your hands.

That is the whole boundary. The refunds page at craftandsite.com/refunds spells out exactly what a first full draft is, and that definition is part of these terms.

What you are buying

Your quote lists every page, every feature, and every outside tool I will connect. If it is not on that list, it is not in the build.

Where a good tool already exists, I connect it rather than rebuild it. Booksy, OpenTable, Square, Calendly, Shopify, and the like.

I do have my own booking widget, and I will quote it when it is the better fit for you.

I do not build custom payment systems or custom apps, I do not run your social media, and I do not promise anything about Google rankings.

Every site comes with a simple editor for your own words and photos. Care adds the hosting, the backups, and the service where you email me the change and I make it.

Your quote is the price

The prices on the pricing page are the real prices. A one to three page site runs $1,200 to $1,800. A multi page site runs $2,800 to $4,500. An online store runs $5,500 to $8,000.

Those figures are what a build of that size costs today. Add ons, a bigger catalog, or a rush job can put your quote above the range, and every one of those is priced on your quote before I start.

The written quote you accept is your price. It changes only when you ask for more work and say yes to the new number in writing. Email counts.

I may change published prices later. That never touches a quote you have already accepted.

Prices are in US dollars. No sales tax is added to your invoice today. If that ever changes, I will tell you before it appears on a quote.

How you pay

A quarter of the build fee to start, the rest when your site goes live. That first quarter is your deposit, and I use the word deposit for it everywhere on these pages. On the published starting prices that is $300 for a starter site and $700 for a business site. A store is quoted, so its deposit is quoted with it.

Each half is a Stripe invoice you pay by card. I never keep your card on file for a build, and nothing is charged unless you click pay. Care plans are different, and that is further down this page.

Work starts the day the deposit clears and your content is in my hands.

Reservation deposit. If we spoke on the phone, you may have been offered a $100 reservation deposit to hold your place in my schedule. It is optional. It comes off your deposit invoice as a $100 credit, and it is refundable in full any time before I send your first full draft, exactly like the rest of your money.

If you ever see a charge you do not recognize, email me before you dispute it and I will sort it out the same day.

If you and I agreed some other way of paying, that arrangement is in your own written agreement and that agreement governs it.

The monthly plan

If you would rather not pay a deposit at all, there is a monthly option: nothing today, then $249 a month for twelve months. It is $279 a month if you want Care+ from the start. That covers building the site and looking after it for that first year.

It takes twelve payments to own it, and there is no lock in. You may stop at any time. If you do, the site comes down and you owe nothing further. After the twelve payments the site is yours, exactly as it would be if you had paid up front, and you carry on with Care at $59 a month, month to month, cancel any time.

If you stop before the twelve months are up, you owe nothing further. I take the site offline and you will not be billed again. I hold the site and your files for ninety days from the day you stop, so ask for them at any point in that window and you get them. There is no early termination fee, no balloon payment, and no collections.

Payments are taken monthly by card through Stripe. Stripe retries a missed payment on its own schedule before anything happens to the site, and I will email you before I take anything offline.

The refund rule is the same as everywhere else: you can have every dollar back any time before I send your first full draft. See craftandsite.com/refunds.

Rounds of changes

You get two rounds of changes, and they are already in your price. Send me your notes, I make them all, twice.

A round is one list of changes sent at once: wording, photos, colors, and moving things around inside the design you already said yes to.

Both rounds happen after your first full draft. That draft is also the point where payments stop being refundable, which is why I only send it once every page in your quote is real and working.

Starting the design over, adding pages, or adding features is new work, not a change. I price extra rounds and new work before I start either one.

How long it takes

A one to three page site usually takes about a week. A multi page site takes two to three weeks. An online store takes three to four weeks.

These are real estimates, not deadlines. The clock starts the day your deposit clears and your content is in my hands, and it stops while I am waiting on you.

If yours is going to run long, you hear it from me before the date passes, not after.

What I need from you

Four things, and the sooner they arrive the sooner your site does.

• Your text, photos, logo, hours, and your menu or services.
• Access to any tool I am connecting. Wherever the tool allows it, add me as a staff or limited user instead of sending me your owner password, and remove me when the build is done. Your accounts stay yours. I am not responsible for money, orders, bookings, or settings inside your own Square, Booksy, Shopify, or bank accounts.
• Permission to use what you send me: photos, logos, text, menus, music, fonts. If something came from somewhere else, tell me and I will find a clean replacement. I have to take your word for it, so if someone comes after me over something you gave me and told me I could use, you cover it. That is the only thing on this page you are on the hook for. There is no broader indemnity here and I am not asking for one.
• Feedback in batches, so we are not stuck going back and forth.

Who owns the site

Once the build fee is paid in full, your site is yours. Your words, your photos, the design as it was built for you, and the right to keep it, change it, move it, or hand it to another developer.

What stays mine is the toolkit I build with: the underlying code, the components, the layouts, and the design system I reuse from one project to the next. You are not buying my toolkit and I am not selling it, which is part of why your site does not cost ten thousand dollars. I will never reuse your content, your photos, or your brand on anyone else's site.

Your online store is built in a Shopify store I set up, then transferred into your name before launch. Once it is transferred you own the store, the products, and the orders, and Shopify bills you for its own plan.

Your domain name is registered in your name, in an account you control. If I set it up for you, I set it up in your name and hand you the login.

Some of what a website costs never comes to me at all. Your domain, Shopify's own plan (about $39 a month), booking tools, paid fonts, stock photos, and paid apps belong to the companies that make them. You either pay those companies directly, or I pay and bill you exactly what it cost me with nothing added on top. They set their own prices, their own terms, and their own uptime, and none of that is in my hands.

If you are on a Care plan and you ever want to leave, I export your site, your text, and your photos and send them to you within five business days, and I hand over any accounts that are in your name. Rebuilding it somewhere else is that person's job, but I will answer their questions for up to an hour, free.

I like showing finished work in my portfolio. If you would rather I did not, say so at any point and I leave you out. No explanation needed. The one exception is the founding ten offer below, where the portfolio permission is part of the deal.

Care and Care+

Care is optional and starts after your site is live. These terms are the Care agreement. There is no separate document.

This is the one thing on this page that renews by itself, so read this part. Stripe keeps your card on file and charges it every month until you cancel. That is not how the build fee works.

• Care, $59 a month: hosting, security updates, daily backups, and two small edits a month. Small means swapping your hours, changing a price, replacing a photo, or putting up a promotion you are running this month.
• Care+, $89 a month: the same hosting, updates, and backups, with unlimited reasonable edits instead of two. Reasonable covers your text, photos, hours, and prices, seasonal refreshes like new photos or a new menu on a page you already have, and adding a section to a page you already have. It does not cover new pages, a redesign, or new features. Those get quoted.
• Prefer to pay once a year? Care is $590 for the year and Care+ is $890. Either way you get twelve months for the price of ten. Annual billing is not set up on the site yet, so ask me and I will send you an invoice.
• Cancelling takes one email to [email protected]. No phone call, no talking you out of it. If you would rather do it yourself, ask me for your billing link and there is a cancel button right on it.
• Cancelling stops the next charge. Your plan runs to the end of the period you have already paid for, monthly or yearly. What happens to money already paid is on the refunds page.

What Care does not promise

Your site runs on Cloudflare's network, not on my computer, so its uptime is Cloudflare's uptime. I do not promise a particular uptime number and I do not give service credits for downtime.

Security updates mean I keep your site and its tools patched and I follow good practice. It is not a promise that nobody will ever break in, and no honest person promises that.

Daily backups mean one is taken every day and I can restore from it. No backup system anywhere is perfect, so keep your own copy of your photos and your words.

I am one person. I read email on weekdays and I aim to answer within two business days, and Care edits usually go live within two business days of me reading them. Those are targets, not guarantees. Care does not include emergency, weekend, or around the clock support. If I am going to be away for more than a couple of days, I tell you before I go.

If a Care payment fails, Stripe retries it and I email you. If it is still unpaid fifteen days later I pause Care, which means I stop making edits and stop watching the site, and I email you again. If it is still unpaid thirty days after that, I can take the site offline, and I tell you before I do. I hold your site and your files for ninety days after that. Ask for your files at any point in that window and you get them.

The founding ten

The first ten Craft & Site clients get 15% off any one time build package, taken off the deposit invoice.

What I ask in return is permission to show a photo of your business alongside your site in my portfolio. That is the whole condition, and it is part of the deal, so it does not come off later.

I will also ask you for an honest public review once your site is live, and I would love one. It is a request, not a condition. The $500 is yours whether you write one or not, and whatever it says, and I will never ask you to change it or take it down. If you do post one, please mention that you got a discount from me. Google and the FTC both want that said out loud, and it protects your review as much as it protects me.

Would rather not do any of it? That is fine. You just pay the normal price.

What I can and cannot promise

I build you a good site and I stand behind the work. I cannot promise sales, traffic, leads, or a Google ranking, and I will not pretend otherwise.

If something goes wrong that is my fault, the most I am responsible for, added up across everything, is the total you have actually paid me in the twelve months before the problem.

I cannot cover what happens after that, like sales you feel you missed while something was broken. That is more than one person can carry, and I would rather say so now than argue about it later.

Two things this does not cover, because it cannot: anything I do dishonestly or on purpose, and anything the law does not allow me to limit. Nothing here removes a right you have under Virginia law.

If a court decides any single line on this page cannot be enforced, every other line still stands.

Ending the project

You can stop at any time, and you do not owe me a reason. Before I send your first full draft, you get back every dollar you have paid. After that, what you have paid is not refundable, because it paid for a finished draft that is already in your hands.

That cutoff only ever covers work I actually delivered. If I take your money and then fail to deliver the site described in your quote, you get back the part you paid for work I did not do. If I go quiet on you for thirty days, or I tell you I cannot finish, you get back everything you paid for work you never received. Nothing on this page bars a refund for work I never did.

I can walk away too. It would take something real, like an illness or a project turning into something neither of us signed up for, and you would hear it from me directly, not by email going quiet. If I stop before your first full draft, you get everything back. If I stop after it, you keep what has been built and I refund the part of your fee for work I did not do.

If I am ever out for a long stretch, or something happens to me, your site keeps running on Cloudflare because it does not live on my computer. Your files and your accounts are yours, and I keep them somewhere you can be given access to. Care billing stops if I cannot do the work.

The legal bits

Virginia law governs these terms. If we ever end up in court it is the Circuit Court for the City of Virginia Beach or the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Norfolk Division, except that either of us can bring a small claim in the general district court where the other one is. For a disagreement this size that is usually the faster and cheaper route.

There is no arbitration clause here and no class action waiver, on purpose.

Nothing on this page takes away your right to dispute a charge with your bank. I would rather you emailed me first so I can simply refund you, but the right is yours and I am not asking you to sign it away.

I may update this page. For your build, whatever it said the day you accepted your quote is what applies to you, and changes never reach back into a project already underway. For Care, the current version applies from your next billing date, and I will email you before any change to what you pay or to what Care includes. Changes never apply to a period you have already paid for.

Your quote, this page, and the refunds page are the whole agreement for your project. The privacy page explains what the website collects and who touches it. It is a notice, not part of this agreement.

Changes go in writing, and email is fine.
